Michael Richards was born to Phyllis, a medical records librarian and William Richards, an electrical engineer. Richards was born and brought up in Culver City, California, where he still lives. Richards took admission in California Institute of the Arts but instead passed out from The Evergreen State College in 1975 receiving a BA degree in drama. Besides this he also earned a short-lived improv act with Ed Begley, Jr. during his time at The Evergreen State College. He then enrolled himself at the Los Angeles Valley College, where he dominated student productions. He also spent some time with the US army.
Richards started with his television career in 1979, with appearing in Billy Crystal’s first cable TV special. After this there was no looking back for the talented actor. In 1980’s we saw him in Fridays a television show, which became quite popular. Richard has guest starred in shows like Miami Vice, Night Court and Cheers. He was often seen doing guest appearances with Jay Leno. He was also seen in the movie Problem Child, where he played the role of serial killer Martin Beck.
But Richards became most famous with his role of Cosmo Kramer in the series ‘Seinfeld’. He was a part of the series for all the time he was on air. He played one of the four friends in the series and till date this is considered to be his best role in the series. Seinfeld was also the most popular sitcom on air by the time it came to an end. For his role in ‘Seinfeld’ Richards won maximum amount of Emmys than any other cast member on Seinfeld. He won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1993, 1994 and 1997.
After the Seinfeld came to an end, Richards started working on his new show, The Michael Richards Show which soon came to an end after receiving poor ratings. Richards then made an appearance on ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ along with other Seinfeld co-stars.
Coming down to his personal life, Richards married former casting director Cathleen Lyons, but divorced her in 1992. Richards has a daughter with her named Sophia. In 2007, it was reported that Richards got engaged to actress Beth Skipp. He also announced in 2007, that he would no more be doing stand up comedy for “spiritual healing” purposes. Richards currently stays in Glendale, California, specifically the Rossmoyne/Mountain area in the Northwest part of the city.
